Kok-Moinok Canyon
Kok-Moynok canyons are picturesque, unique canyons located in Kyrgyzstan, the district of the Tonsky district of Issyk–Kul region, 170 km away. East of the capital of the republic, Bishkek, or 11 km west of Balykchy. The canyons are part of the Boomsky Gorge. The canyons acquired their name due to the village of the same name located nearby.
The canyons are water-washed rocks of the mountains. The leaching process took place over tens, maybe hundreds of thousands of years, leaving behind picturesque patterns of rock. A dozen canyons with different lengths, depths, and widths have formed on the terrain.
The foot of the canyons is located at an altitude of 1,500 meters above sea level. The upper point of the canyons themselves is 1650-1700 meters above the level, so the average elevation difference is 150-200 meters. There is a large amount of iron oxide in the soil of the canyons, which gives them a characteristic orange color.
